Clinical Studies of 217 Cases of Burn Patients

Abstract
During the past 20 months from October, 1974 to June, 1976, 217 Cases of burn patients were treated with 0.5% silver nitrate cream at surgical department of Presbyterian Medical Center, Taegu, Korea and the results were reviewed and summarized as following.
1. Most frequent age group was under 10 years (65.4%), the youngest being 4 months old and the oldest being 74 years old. Males and females were affected nearly equal, the incidence being 115 cases (53%) and 102 cases (47%) respectively.
2. Seasonal difference showed the highest incidence in spring and the lowest in autumn.
3. The causes of burns were scalding (68%), flame (27%) and others. The age group of scalding burns was, predominantly under 10 years of age.
4. Among 217 cases of burn patients, 68 cases (31. 5%) and burns of 10% of body surface, 114 cases (52. 6%) had 11~30%. 22 cases (10. 1%) had 31~50%, 6 cases (2. 7%) had 51~70% and 7 cases (3.2%) had over 71%.
5. The predominating organisms cultured out of infected wounds of 78 cases were Pseudom-onas aeruginosa 28 (35.9%), enterobacter 20 (25.6%) staphylococcus aureus 18 (23. 1%), E. Coli 3 (3.8%), and ?-hemolytic streptococcus 3 (3.8%).
6. The main complications were wound infection (35.9%), Curling ulcer (5.1%), septicemia (4.6%). renal failure (2.3%), respiratory difficulty (2.3%) and burn shock (2.3%) in order.
7. The overall mortality in this series was 10.1% (22 cases) and the most frequent causes of death was septicemia (27.3%).
